Triton Preview

Details: Saturday, 10:00 AM at Bethany Christian High School

Last Season Review:  Last season we defeated the Trojans 3-2 in Bourbon. It was a close match won by all three of our singles players.

3 Interesting Facts:
#1 - Usually, both Bethany and Triton enter this match with winning records. This year, from what I can find, we are both right at .500.
#2 - Triton has switched their lineup up in 4 of their 6 matches. We've switched in 4 of our 8 matches.
#3 - This Saturday match is usually the one that falls closest to my birthday, so we've got to win it as an early birthday present to me :-)

Triton Details: From the results that I could gather, Triton seems to be 3-3 on the season. All 3 of their losses were by 3-2 scorelines, including a recent close loss to Plymouth, who traditionally has a strong team. They have four players who have really performed well this season, and have tried a lot of different lineups trying to utilize these players to earn maximum points. It will be interesting to see what lineup they throw out against us tomorrow.

Bethany Christian Details: We're coming off two easy wins to even our season record at 4-4. We've been playing better and better tennis, so it will be interesting to see how we respond to another close challenge. Nate is on a 7 match winning streak.

Projected Triton Lineup:
Individual Records in Parenthesis - I don't have complete Triton records, their tourney was difficult to to get full results on, so the records are approximate.
#1S - Jeff Ross (6-3)
#2S - Dean Howdeshell (7-2)
#3S - Jared Fisher (5-4)
#1D -Pete Kauffman (8-1) - Lucas Shafer (6-3)
#2D - Darren Harrell (2-6) - Jake Oldham (2-4)

Outlook: Here we go again. After two matches where we were able to be on a bit of cruise control, we're back into the tight ones as a team. While we will probably have a good matchup at #1 singles, the other positions seem to be ones that we could win or lose. With Nate playing really good tennis lately, it has been a task of trying to find the two extra points to get us the team win. Who wants to step up and earn us these points? Who wants to commit to working harder in practice, to getting better, to being confident? Those are the questions...

#08 - We're Somewhere in the Middle, Let's Move Up

With the 5-0 win tonight, our Bruin team has evened up our season record at 4-4. I was reflecting on the fact that we're .500 right now, won as many as we've lost, and feeling like our last two victories weren't really high level, and that we're really not a .500 level team.

Tonight, again, we played an inexperienced team. All 5 players are in their first year of tennis, let alone high school tennis. #1 and #2 singles were both freshmen, and also had not had lessons or been to camps or even really tried the sport outside of maybe gym class. The rest of the team was older, but still hadn't really played.

And so the matches reflected that. Nathan again got an easy win, 6-0, 6-0. And Ike got his second 6-0, 6-0 in a row as well. That improves each of their records, which is cool, but it doesn't feel very satisfying. Abe lost one game, as he worked on cranking his second serves up a little bit. It was good spot practice, but it doesn't feel as good as a hard earned 3 set win against a rival.

And so far this year, we've lost those rival matches. While we did avenge a couple of 3-2 losses to Columbia City and Fremont, we dropped 3-2 matches to Jimtown and Goshen, our Sectional rivals. And so it feels like maybe we're a little down right now.

Yet, .500 is where we are. I'd say that is probably about right, if we played every team in the state, I bet we'd beat half and get beat by the other half. Looking at scores, I'd say we're somewhere in the middle as far as teams in our area.

But the goal is to move up. Next time we play the tight one, we'll take it home. Have another team lower on the ladder than we are. Move towards the upper tier of teams. And hopefully, we'll keep the winning ways right up and through the end of the season. We may be in the middle now, but tonight at practice, Saturday at the next match, we're looking to keep moving up.

How to Learn Tennis the Effective Way

Excepted from: Tennis Mind Game

When you're learning a new technique, you obviously need to consciously think about it for a while.

Nevertheless, your goal must be to allow your subconscious to take over as soon as possible. Therefore you need focus on technique consciously for a while and then STOP.

Then start playing tennis by focusing on tactics – this can simply mean keeping the ball in play and looking to play the ball deep or in a certain direction or playing at a certain height or even playing a certain pattern.

While you're doing this, you need to get feedback from a coach on how that new technique looks and whether it's there already or whether you'll need to think about it again later. If there's no coach, you need to be able to observe yourself – but only here and there – and see and feel whether that new movement is already there or not.

If you observe yourself ALL THE TIME, you'll again be too conscious and you won't allow the subconscious to take over.

You need to play freely for a few minutes, just focusing on the ball flight and tactics and then observe yourself for a minute or so to see what's going on.

Then, you need to return to playing for a while, returning again later to observing and correcting yourself.

The periods of observing and correcting need to become shorter and shorter and you need to focus more and more just on playing.

This way, you'll allow a smooth and quick transition of that new technique (new movement) into your subconscious.

You must have the end goal clearly in mind – and that is to have no more thinking about technique!

You're trying to get from a place of thinking about technique to a place where you're not thinking about technique and you're simply playing tennis.

How are you going to stop thinking about technique if you keep focusing on it???

You need to let go and think less and less! Let your body and subconscious take over as soon as possible.

When you watch a professional tennis player (or even a very good club player) play tennis, they are NOT thinking about technique at any point during the match.

They are simply thinking WHERE AND HOW they want to play the ball. (And by "thinking" I mean actually visualizing the ball flight.)

When you drill, think on the technique... but when you are hitting or playing, think tactics. Where and how do I want to play the ball. You'll find your game improving in surprising ways!

#07 - What's the Same

Tonight, we had a fairly easy victory over a young, inexperienced Laville squad. Many would say that you can't take very much from a match like this, but I'd challenge that.

The mistakes that cost you the few points that you lost in an easy match tonight will be the same mistakes that cost you in an intense under pressure match.

Maybe you mentally lost focus. Maybe you hit a few approach shots long. Maybe you were pushing your second serve. Maybe you hit a forehand down the line into the net. Maybe you double-faulted a whole game away. Maybe you framed some returns.

All of these were errors that we made tonight. And they are the very things that are our weaknesses, no matter who we are playing. The thing to learn from a match like tonight is where to work.

In watching the match tonight, I've got specifics in mind for every player, from Nate down through the lineup to Hans. I hope you do too. I hope you're ready to go to work, because we've still got a ways to go in this season, and it still will be very special.

Notes & Stats
- Nathan lost the first point of his match, then he won all the rest. That's right, you read that correctly. He won 48 straight points.

- This is the least games that a Bruin team has surrendered as a team since I've been coaching.

- Laville's varsity included at least 5 players who are in their first year of tennis. This is also only their second match. That's a good definition of inexperienced.

- Nathan has now won 2 matches in a row with 6-0, 6-0 scorelines. He also took a set from Fremont at 6-0. Over the last 3 matches, his total games score is an astounding 36-1.

- Ike Lehman finally didn't have a tiebreak!

- Both #1 and #2 doubles won their first sets 6-0 and then lost the first game of the second set. There is a tendency to lose focus after winning the first set for all tennis players. That will be something to continue to work on.

- There was no JV contest tonight.

#2S - Ike Lehman - 6-0, 6-0 - Matt Dickson

#06JV: The Difference

The Jimtown JV Invitational is an excellent tourney for our JV players. It truly gives the feel of what a varsity match is like... evenly matched players in a 2-out-of-3 set format. It also gives some experience in these Saturday matches, where it is hot and the days are long and you get tired. And when I arrived, the team looked tired.

But within tiredness, the team learned a secret. The secret makes all the difference.

When I arrived, Sol Brenneman and Landon Weldy were Bethany's only players still on the court in the second round versus Jimtown. Both looked to be playing inferior opponents, but Sol was in a tiebreak and Landon was down big in the second set. It didn't take too long to figure out what was wrong.

The attitude was completely negative, and so was the movement. Those things are often related, but more on that later. Sol was playing against a singles player who rarely hit the ball hard, and yet, here was Sol out of position and reaching for shots. Landon was playing against a similar player, and yet he was having trouble keeping the ball in the court. Running at a straight line to the net after his returns, Landon either missed or made the volley, thus deciding the point.

But there was very little energy, either from the team or from the remaining players on the court.

And attitude and movement matter so much in tennis.

Just ask Nate from the Concord match. Down 0-5, he changed two things, his feet to hustle more and his attitude to get excited from his big shots and let the bad ones go. He won 4 straight games and the 3rd set.

Or ask Abe, who got destroyed by a patient pusher at Columbia City and then turned around and did the destroying himself against a patient pusher against Fremont.

Or Joel and Hans who turned their Jimtown match around on Saturday simply by deciding to be more aggressive.

The difference between a solid varsity player and a JV player is simple. It's rarely their strokes, their serves or their volleys... it's usually their minds and their feet. Good players know that these are connected, and they stay positive in attitude by moving their feet during the point.

If there was ever evidence of that, it was the third round match of this invitational. Sol went back and forth with Concord's in the first set, but then in the second he was coached to aggressively attack the ball with HIS FEET. The result? 6-1 in the 2nd vs. 7-5 in the 1st.

Tristan had the same thing going, after a great first set, he tired and lost concentration in the second. One simple piece of advice for the super tiebreak - move your feet like a varsity player. The result? A 10-7 tiebreak win!

And I think that was the difference, the secret that we've got to get through our heads.

Move aggressively to the ball, get pumped about good shots, let the bad ones go.

Now, we have to start practicing this way. Now we have to start getting better.

#06 - Why We Practice

I wish we could all start the tennis season as better players than every team we play. In 2010, when we lost to only 2 different teams on our schedule, we had the luxury of knowing that in almost every match, our players were simply better. Ben Mast was the better #1, Seth Krabill was a better #2, and Nathan Brendle was the better #3, etc, etc. It was comforting and relaxing in many ways... but most seasons aren't like that.

Most seasons we start out somewhere in the middle. Some teams are better than us, some teams return more talent, some teams return less but have worked very hard, some teams are having down years. And we're usually somewhere in there.

Most seasons are decided by who really gets better during the season. Who makes adjustments. Who is playing their best, most confident tennis at the end of the season. Who figures out strategies to win with what they have. Who makes the most of their team support. Who can stay focused.

The Jimtown match is a perfect example of that.

Jimtown had 8 different players play a varsity match against us last year. All 8 return. We return only 4 of our players that played last year (Nate, Abe, Ike, and Parth). At the beginning of the season, it certainly seems like Jimtown is in a good position to defeat us this year, and make a good run in the postseason.

But can we get better during our practice season? Can we harness our mental abilities and focus? Can we put in the time and be ready?

We seem to be moving that direction.

In this match, Nathan easily won the #1 singles match. It was the first match to come off the courts, and obviously, throughout his career, Nathan has put in the time to be a dominant singles player. This win moves his record on the season to 5-1. I was especially impressed by Nathan's continuing elevation of his mental approach to the game and his improving patience.

In every other match, we played great and yet it became obvious where we need to improve. #1 doubles ran into a great team tonight, A team that has played several seasons of varsity and were one of the better teams in the area last year. Despite their disadvantage in experience, Himal and Parth hung right in every game, often because of their ability to play smart at the net. These guys will have to continue to develop that strength, and add to their rallying from the baseline ability in further practices.

Joel and Hans had not faced an opponent like the Jimmies yet this year, a team that can hit the ball hard and will attempt to be the aggressor on every point. In the first set, Hans and Joel looked a little overwhelmed and timid. As the set wore on, they got the right attitude, but their movement continued to be a bit timid. The right attitude is harder to teach than the right strokes, so now we'll start on those strokes in practice. But their attitude alone brought them close, a 4-6, 5-7 loss isn't too bad.

Abe Thorne sealed a second win for the Bruins, once again going the distance on a Saturday morning match, and playing three close sets. He must really like playing in the weekend sun. His match was tight, as he took on senior Dan Gongwer, who played #1 singles at the end of last season. It was a really interesting tactical match, as Abe won the first set by keeping the ball deep, and then Gongwer took the second by forcing the points to be played closer to net. But in the third and decisive set, Abe displayed the mental composure that he's been working on, and also threw in some new wrinkles to give Gongwer different looks. It was a close set, with Gongwer actually taking a 5-4 lead and having three match points. Abe was able to save them all, one with a gasp inducing backhand volley that landed just barely in the corner. After the 5-5 tie, Abe began to play very confidently. Increasingly Abe's variety is important for the end of his season. It allowed him success today.

But the point that clinched the match for the Jimmies had already been won. Jimtown got their third victory at #2 singles, where Ike Lehman lost to Jake Ward. In the first set, Ike struggled with consistency against Ward's power. However, at the end of the set, he figured out how to be consistent and to battle. This consistency is key to Ike's game. He cannot be the one to make the final error, obviously, and is finding new ways to be in control of the point. In the second set, Ike held his serve beautifully with his consistency. However, the match got to a tiebreak and Ward stopped making errors. He calmed down, kept the ball in the court, and Ike didn't have an answer.

But that's why we practice, so that next time the match changes, next time we're tight, next time it is a 3-2 match, we'll have the answer.

Notes & Stats
- This is the second 5 match winning streak that we've had snapped by a 3-2 scoreline this year. We also had a 5 match winning streak against Goshen.

- 3-2 matches make for memories, one way or the other. If I was scripting a perfect season, we'd have lots of 3-2 matches, won and lost to make for better drama. Last season, we had nine 3-2 matches. We won 6 of those. This year we've already had four 3-2 matches, however we've lost 3 of those. We'll pick it up as we gain experience, and hopefully turn a couple more of these matches around.

- For as much as Nathan wins, tonight's match was his first 6-0, 6-0 victory! He had 5 different 6-0, 6-1 victories, but surprisingly had never had a double bagel.

- While Abe denied some match points, Ike had two points to level his match at one set apiece. Unfortunately, Ward was able to save these.

- Also in Ike's match, just like the Columbia City match, Ike went down big in the tiebreak. Trailing 6-1 he reeled off 4 straight points to draw within 1. He couldn't get the next one to tie up the tiebreak.

- Staying with Ike again, this is his third straight match with a tiebreak. Yea, he is truly that close.

Jimtown Preview

Details: Saturday, 9:00 AM at Bethany Christian High School

Last Season Review:  We defeated Jimtown 4-1 during the season and 3-2 in the Sectional. You can find those match stories by clicking on either score.

3 Interesting Facts:
#1 - This is the first time since Matt started coaching that we don't face the Jimmies in the Concord Invite.
#2 - Last year, Abe Thorne and Evan Grimes had one of the closest matches in Bethany history against the Jimmies. They won 6-7, 7-6, (16-14) in a third set tiebreak. The only other match to have as many tiebreaks is when Kyle Miller and Matt Ebersole defeated Bremen 6-7, 7-6, 7-6
#3 - With this being the 20th anniversary of Bethany Christian tennis, the history of the BC v. Jimtown match-up is interesting. We were beaten the first 16 (!) times we played the Jimmies, but now have won the last 5 meetings.

Jimtown Details: The Jimmies are 2-1 on the season, with wins over NorthWood and Bremen and a loss to Elkhart Memorial. The Memorial and Bremen matches were both 3-2, with one going for and one against Jimtown. In the Memorial match, all 3 singles lost while in the Bremen match, 2 of the 3 won.

Bethany Christian Details: We've really begun to get into a groove with how we're playing. Now, besides a good rhythm, we need to get better. But the last two matches have been great, being able to snag two wins against solid teams. We're now 2-3 and would love to move back to .500 on the season.

Projected Jimtown Lineup:
Individual Records in Parenthesis
#1S - Austin Ward (2-1)
#2S - Jake Ward (2-1)
#3S - Jacob Gongwer (2-1)
#1D - Brett Aller/Cole Peterson (3-0)
#2D - Augie Farwig/Michael Hobbs (2-1)

Outlook: Similar to every match we've had this year, this team is going to be good. Returning every player from last year will do that for you. We've got to be on top of our game in this match, relaxed and playing with focus. Errors will hurt us, timidity will hurt us... so we'll just have to play with the opposite: smaggressive tennis. I'd guess this will be a 3-2 match one way or the other, and we're going to have to play under pressure to pull it out. Let's hope we perform like we did against Fremont, continually improving, continually learning.

#05 - The Right Direction

On Tuesday, our varsity played an excellent tight match to turn things around in the season. Tonight, we concentrated on heading in the right direction. Playing our style, with confidence, and continuing to stay focused no matter the score or match situation.

The most obvious match to see this improvement in was Abe Thorne's. After losing on Tuesday to a very consistent, non-hard hitting player, Abe dedicated himself to focusing on his mental game and his smaggressive play. Today, matched up against a freshman playing in much the same style, Abe stroked his way to an easy 1st with volleys and well placed topspin balls. In the second set, he faced some adversity as he got down early, 1-2. But riding his early smart ball, he began to angle off the volleys and control his serve, and recovered to not lose another game.
That was Abe's first victory on the season, and another Bruin picked up their first as well. Ike Lehman grabbed his first victory in a very well played patient match against fellow senior Glen McClain. Ike used a consistent first set to exploit McClain's weaker backhand, but the second set tightened up as Ike had trouble breaking McClain's serve. However, Ike came through with clutch service games of his own, sending the match into a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, tied at 3, Ike came up with the shot of the night. With McClain at the net, Ike was sent far into his forehand corner. On a dead sprint, he whipped a sliced forehand with a wrist flick that just barely cleared the top of the net. McClain couldn't handle the low ball, and Ike took a 4-3 lead. Growing in confidence in these tight situations, he went on to pound an overhead at match point for a two set win.

Also grabbing two set wins were Nathan Brendle and #2 doubles, Hans Miller and Joel Gerig. They both played similar matches in that at any point, their opponents would hit amazing shots. But these three just played consistently better. And the #2 doubles victory sealed the match for the Bruins.

#1 doubles played on, but they couldn't quite pull out the victory. Little mistakes in crucial times still seem to bother this team, something we'll iron out as the season goes on. It was a great match.

In the JV, the top positions cruised. #1 and #2 singles and doubles all had easy victories, giving Landon, Tristan and Neel their first victories of the season. The story of the day at all these positions was that we were just more consistent, something that hasn't been able to be said all year to this point. Another step in the right direction!

Notes & Stats
- Nate now has the most varsity victories with 4, Hans also has a winning record at 3- 1. But every player who has played a varsity match this season now has 1 victory (at least).

- Sol Brenneman, Justin Zehr, and Wade Troyer lead into the JV with 2 wins each.

- Nate continued the trend of long matches at Fremont, short ones here at Bethany. What an effort from him tonight, he thoroughly controlled his match.

- The JV match came down to the last team on the court, Delan Schrock and Jacob Rudy-Froese. After losing the first 5 games, they mounted a short comeback and won the next game to go to 1-5, then had a game point to go to 2-5. But they couldn't keep it up, and we lost JV 4-5.

- We won the JV 5-4 last year in a similar circumstance. Neel Bhagat and Luke Schrock won the very last match to seal it for us.

- Tonight was the first time we sang "Sarasponda" on our courts after a win this season. We were shocked to find out that the freshman had never learned this song in choir!

- Our new jerseys came yesterday and we tried them out tonight. Looks like good luck! Check out all their majesty:
And I love Joel's goofy grin :-)

Fremont Preview

Details: Thursday, August 23, 4:45 at Bethany Christian High School

Last Season Review: Last year, we lost 3-2 to the Eagles. It came down to the very last position on the courts, and was disappointing in the end.

3 Interesting Facts:
#1 - This was the first match that I helped schedule when I became coach of the Bruins. It's been a great matchup almost every year, including last year which was so close.
#2 - We've tended to have grueling #1 singles matches against the Eagles. Both Luke Hostetter and Nathan Brendle have recorded 3 hour matches against Fremont. Interestingly, both long matches took place at Fremont.
#3 - Speaking of Nathan, he's only played 3 set matches against Fremont. He's 1-1 in those matches.

Fremont Details: The Eagles are 2-0 on the season with a 2nd place finish in their own invitational this past weekend. Fort Wayne Snider was the team that bested them at the invitational. The Eagles #1 doubles won that tournament, but are coming off their own 1st loss against Northrup.

Bethany Christian Details: We're coming off our first victory of the season, a 3-2 tightly contested match against the Eagles of Columbia City.

Projected Fremont Lineup:
Individual Record in Parenthesis
#1S - Tyler Jenkins (3-2)
#2S - Glen McClain (4-1)
#3S - Logan Miller (4-1)
#1D - Brandon Miller/Tanner Frye (4-1)
#2D - Drew Sullivan/Mason Kolberg (3-2)

Outlook: This is another one of those tight matches that we need to start winning. We responded very well to this type of match at Columbia City, but we really do need to take our momentum from that match and put it into a new pattern of winning. We are going to need our #2 and #3 singles to perform as well, perhaps getting a win out of one or both of these positions. These are certainly the best kind of matches, the ones where you're not sure what's going to happen and who's going to step up. I can't wait to see who brings it at this match.

#04 - Changing the Pattern

The last 2 matches of the 2012 season saw the Bruins drop 3-2 decisions, close matches that could have been turned around by one individual's or one doubles team's ability to pull out a couple more big points, stay cool in nervous situations, or simply perform at a high level throughout the match instead of having lulls.

The last 2 matches with Columbia City have seen us drop excruciating 3-2 decisions, close matches that could have been turned around by those very same big pressure performances.

Our unfortunate pattern has been to feel the pressure, tighten up, and lose those tight matches.

But now, we're changing those patterns.

This match saw us play some of our best tennis in pressure situations, pulling out the three crucial matches with three excellent performances.

First, Joel Gerig and Hans Miller got the first point for the Bruins. As #2 doubles was the one spot that the Eagles had taken from Concord, I was a little nervous about this match. Hans and Joel put me at ease early. They really played great tennis, but what impressed me most was the way in which they won. They won by staying on the attack the entire match. They took advantage of good positioning, finished balls at the net, and played solid from the baseline. Their match was the quickest of all five, as they picked up momentum throughout.

Another position that got off to a great start was #1 doubles. We hadn't won any points at #1 doubles yet this year, a pattern which needed to be changed. In the beginning of this match, it was obvious that Himal was hunting for that win. Some, Parth joined him. I wish I had a count of the number of net points that this team putaway during the match. I'm sure the count would reach be above 50. It was remarkable. The first set breezed by as they got a 6-2 set.

In the second, the match stayed tight. It seemed that we were rallying more from the baseline, and having trouble keeping the ball in the court. Still, the Eagles were struggling with errors of their own. The set stayed tight, but Himal and Parth pulled ahead at the end to grab a 5-4 lead. They couldn't finish, then grabbed a 6-5 lead. They couldn't finish, so it went to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, they denied one set point before having a match point on Parth's serve. Unfortunately, they couldn't convert and soon lost the set to head to a third.

At this point, the pattern of the match was set. We would either hit winners or make errors and the Eagles were playing defensive. We were making slightly more errors than winners in the beginning of the set, and the Eagles grabbed a 4-2 lead. But then, we changed the pattern. We moved quicker at the net, we hit more first serves in, we finished with sharp angles right at the Eagle net players. Soon, it was 4-3, then 4-4, then with two relatively easy games, we'd won 6-4. It was a smoothly, almost nerveless end of the match.

As it turned out, this match sealed the clinching point, because of what happened in Nathan Brendle's match just before.

For two years, Nathan has faced off against classmate Derek Hinen of Columbia City. In 2010, we lost 3-2 to Columbia City with the final, decisive match being Nate's loss to Hinen. Last year, we lost 3-2 as well, with the final match being Nate's 3-set loss to Hinen. This year, Nathan was determined to change that pattern.

But it looked like it might come down to him again. With the other matches ending, Nathan had played a superb first set, sealing it at a comfortable 6-3. In the second set, he built a lead of 4-1, but soon Hinen was really finding his game. Derek Hinen is so quick and athletic, he can track down just about any ball. Last year, his style led him to within 1 match of the Individual State Finals. This match, he really found his form in the middle of the second set. Nathan took a 5-3 lead, but Hinen held tight to close it to 5-4. But with continued patience, Nathan continued to work each point. In the past, Nathan would get to impatient, overswing, and give away free points. In this match, he changed that mental pattern and became stronger as the point went on. The result: a 2-set win in a big, big match!

The other two matches saw us play some good tennis and learn a lot as well, especially about playing consistent players who play without a lot of pace on their shots. Abe Thorne at #3 singles looked like he was cruising to a victory as he took a 5-1 lead in the first set, but then he couldn't seem to find his groove again as senior Drew Benedict barely missed another shot. Abe lost 11 of the last 14 games, struggling to keep positive against the human backboard that Benedict became.

The story was similar for Ike Lehman. He attacked his way to a set lead, then took a 5-2 lead in the second. But the tactics then changed, and Ike struggled against fatigue and tightness to finish overheads and points at the net. Errors compiled as did frustration. The second set was lost in a tiebreak, and then in the third Ike just seemed to run out of gas. It was a gutsy effort, but one that didn't ultimately succeed.

Which was too bad. It would have been good to have a Bruin sweep on this day. But we're beginning to change patterns to our favor, so let's hope this trend continues.

Notes & Stats
- Another changing pattern: In our last 2 matches, we've watched a team member win a third set after the match has already been decided as a loss. In this match, we watched Columbia City win a third set after they'd already lost.

- This marked the first varsity win of the season for two juniors: Joel Gerig and Parth Patel. Nice job guys!

- Like Abe, Ike unfortunately lost 11 of his last 13 games. A pattern that we will change.

- Another interesting stat to keep would have been how many times Parth and Himal hit their opponents at the net. Keep your guard up when these guys are at net!

Monday Morning Reflection

"So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

- Isaiah 41:10

At tennis camp, we reflected on the nature of God's work. We looked at the good news that God seems to always be working in many ways, but God saves us from the things that hold us back, God forms us into a supporting family, God reveals his character to us so that we may know God better, and God gives us blessing that we are to be thankful for and extend to others.

As the tennis season unfolds, I notice that as we play, we struggle with confidence. We struggle to play to our strengths and let everything fall where it may. We struggle to let the things that matter matter, and to let the things that don't matter go.

In times of struggle, I fear my ability as a coach is too little. I fear that I won't be able to pull the right strings, say the right things, lead the right drills, emphasize the correct skills. I fear that I am simply too inept.

My boys have an album of songs by a kid's band called Seeds Family Worhip. This band takes Bible verses and puts them to music. Some of the songs are really catchy, and this weekend, after the Concord loss, as my head swirled with all the fears and thoughts of what to do come Monday, this song came on as I drove the family to church:

"Do not fear, for I am with you."

Immediately, two things occurred to me. First, that I need to be saved from these thoughts. They don't help me become a better coach, they simply convince that I'll never be the coach I need to be. Do not fear, the song says, and I remembered another Bible verse: "Perfect love drives out fear." There is no fear that I need to hold.

And the second thing I noticed was why. I don't have to be afraid because of God's presence. It is a relational reason, not a logical reason. It's not because there aren't problems. It's not because their aren't decisions. It's not because I'll get everything right. I don't have to be afraid because God is with me.

Relating this to the team, I realized. This is true in so many ways. First and foremost, no matter how poorly we're playing, how tight the match is, how frustrated we are... we need not be afraid, God is with us. This is the bigger story of life that we're living, the bigger good news. God gives us that important perspective, this tennis match is just a breath in the larger picture of life. God is with us, so we can turn that fear over to God.

Even more practical though, is the fact that fear is driven out by relationship. "Perfect love drives out fear..." and "Do not fear, for I am with you." If we are to believe that we can actually relax and see each match, each practice, each challenge as just a passing breath, then we need to know that we actually have a supporting tennis family behind us. A family that love us for us. For our character, not our wins. For the person that we are, not the skills that we have. We need to know that though every match might come down to whether Joel wins or not, or Hans, or Sol, or Justin, or whoever... even if they would lose every single time it depended on them... our love would never stop.

That is what will set us apart. And this means in private and in public. We can't just hug a guy after he's lost a killer match, then tell others how we would have won if coach only put us in that position. Or how if he would have worked harder during the offseason we'd be undefeated right now. Nope, we put those things behind us.

The truth is, I think we have that type of team. We just need to trust that we do. The freedom will be amazing.

God is with us, and we are with each other.

Columbia City Preview

Details: Tuesday, August 21 at Columbia City

Last Season Review: Last year, we lost 3-2 to Columbia City in excruciating fashion. It came down to the last match left on the court, which we couldn't convert.

3 Interesting Facts:
#1 - This will be the first of 2 "Eagle" nicknamed teams that we face this week.
#2 - We have never defeated the Columbia City Eagles. In the 2 years that we faced them, each match has finished with us losing 3-2.
#3 - We have 1 common opponent played this season, the Concord Minutemen. We lost 3-2 on Saturday while Columbia City lost 4-1 last Monday.

Columbia City Details: From the match reports I can find, it looks like Columbia City is 1-2, having lost to Concord and Warsaw, while defeating Churubusco. Those results don't tell very much about them as a team. Concord and Warsaw are both strong teams, while Churubusco is weak. Their have been some interesting scores within these matches, like #2 singles going to 3 sets with Warsaw and #1 doubles being taken to 3 sets by Churubusco.

Bethany Christian Details: We unfortunately lost a close one to Concord on Saturday. If Abe's tiebreak would have gone his way, we may have found ourselves with our first win of the season. Instead, we sit at 0-3 as a team, with two losses of the 3-2 variety.

Projected Columbia City Lineup:
Individual Record in Parenthesis
#1S - Derek Hinen (1-2)
#2S - Nick Rongos (1-2)
#3S - Drew Benedict (1-1)
#1D - Blake Fearnow/Mason Coverstone (1-1)
#2D - Austin Paul/Daniel Woll (2-1)

Outlook: This is a match of turning the tides. We've lost our last two matches 3-2, to Concord and Goshen. We've lost to Columbia City 3-2 the past two times we've played them. We have yet to record our first team win of the season. This is the match where we've got to play good tennis and change the trends. I get the feeling that Columbia City is a team much like us, trying to figure things out as the season goes. They've tried several different lineups, as have we. They've had some close individual matches, as have we. It's time to be ready for our best match yet. Improving each time.

#03 - Harder and Flatter

The running joke this tennis season, started by senior Nathan Brendle, is that if you need to do better in your play, you should just hit the ball harder and flatter. Of course, this is usually the opposite of what you need, but let's see how this advice panned out on down the line, throughout the match against Concord.

First, at #2 singles, Ike Lehman could have used some different advice. Playing in his first singles match this season, he faced Minuteman senior Matt Kotva. Last year, Kotva took out Blake Shetler. This year, Ike went close in just about every game, but just missed on the big points. Ironically, when he would attack he would often get a flat shot and send the ball long. So Ike might need the exact opposite advice in his next match, something more like "spin and speed."

At #1 doubles, Hans and Joel faced off against an experienced squad of seniors. After getting off to a good start, they couldn't quite hold with the pace on the court. The Minuteman duo had serves that were putting us on our back feet, and putaways that, well, put us away. So Hans and Joel might need to go harder in their next match, in that way, the advice at least halfway holds.

Himal and Wade were playing their first varsity doubles match together at #2 doubles tonight. They hit the ball plenty hard tonight, especially when Wade was coming forward to attack high balls at the net or when Himal was slamming in his serve. Both weapons served them well tonight as they drove their way to a win, with Wade smashing away the last point. However, their only struggle came from balls that just floated, either long or to the net person from Concord. Perhaps they need a little bit of flatter.

Which takes us to the two epic varsity singles matches, the matches that ultimately decided the outcome of the team match.
Playing #3 singles for the first time this year, Abe Thorne didn't get off to the best of starts against fellow junior Jared Searer. To begin the first set, Abe seemed tentative and unsure, and got down 0-3. He found his groove in attacking the net, and ended up turning the first set around to his advantage, winning 6-4. In the second, he couldn't get anything going, and fell fairly quickly 1-6. This set up the third and final set, and with all the other matches finished, it was clear that we needed Abe's match to have a shot at a team victory.

Trading games was the trend in this third set, as no one ever really pulled ahead. Early Abe's attacking game paid dividends, as it loosened him up and allowed him to play with aggression. But Searer fought back, eventually holding a 5-4 advantage and trying to close out the set. But Abe held on behind some big serving and clutch scrambling. The final set entered a tiebreak to decide it. Abe came out big behind two big serves and some tight play from Searer. Winning the first 4 points, it looked like Abe might tie the team match at 2-2. But then, Abe could have used some of the joking advice - the part about hitting it harder. Tightening up, Abe began to push and lost a couple points, then some more, and all of a sudden, after a double fault, Abe had lost 7 straight points and thus the match.

It was and wasn't disappointing at the same time. Abe had played admirable tennis, but we had lost the team match. Which left just Nate on the court.

Playing #1 singles, Nate had won a long, hard first set over junior Nick Pollock. Trailing 5-4, Nate rallied to win the last three games and sealed a 7-5 set. It was an emotional set too, with Nate and Nick both grabbing energy from their winners and looking very dejected after mistakes. "C'mons!" and "Let's Go's!" rung through the courts.

The second set started, and Nate quickly lost his rhythm. No more were the encouraging cries coming from the court as a stream of errors and big serves from Nick led to a 0-5 for Nate. Talking to Nate at the fence, I reminded him of the necessity of finding that positive energy. Leave that last point behind, get energy from the good shots.
And Nate accomplished just that. He turned the second set around, getting pumped and moving all around the court. Pulling 4 games in a row out, it looked like he'd maybe tie the set. But he didn't, and all of a sudden, we were also headed to a third set.

In the third set, it became evident early that Nick Pollock was trying to attack Nate's backhand off the serve return. Nate was also doing an insanely good job of attacking and moving Pollock when Nate was returning. So no one was holding. Nate is the biggest proponent of harder and flatter. But today, I told him that after his serve, as the ball came into his backhand, he needed more spin and less speed. The exact opposite of his advice.

But man, did Nate execute. Trailing 4-3 in the third set, he suddenly found big shot after big shot. A crushed forehand down the line, a backhand volley into the corner, an overhead from inside the service line, a backhand into the open court. Not only this, but he was gaining momentum from every shot as well. Errors were less frequent, and Pollock began to tighten a bit as well. In the final game, as a Pollock forehand flew long, Nate let out one final "Let's go!" on a big victory for him.

Harder and flatter... maybe sometimes. We could have used a little bit more of whatever Nate had inside him today. The final varsity scoreline of 2-3 seems cruel after how well the team played today. The truth is that our play today will win most matches. We'll just have to see if we can keep improving. But it probably won't come from harder and flatter.

Notes & Stats
- Nate's final match time of 3 hours and 12 minutes is the second longest match in Bethany Christian tennis history. Only Luke Hostetter's marathon-like 3 hours and 45 minutes is longer.

- The JV match also ended in a loss. 2-4. Although Concord had to have two of their positions play a second time. In first time only match-ups, it would have been 2-2.

- Another Bruin picked up their very first win today. After Jack Erlacher accomplished that feat on Thursday, Ethan Lapp won his first match today.

- Some others got their first win on the season. Sol Brenneman got a #1 singles JV win for his first of the year. That actually ties him for most JV victories this year, with a lot of others.

- I'm sure that Abe and Nate's matches had to be a record for the most "C'mons!" and "Let's go's!" But that was awesome!

- Nate's match was also one of the closest matches ever, with only 2 games decided every set.

- Last year, Abe's match against Jimtown at the Concord Invite was decided in a third set tiebreak. One year later, his match was again decided in a tiebreak.

- Joel and Hans actually held an early lead in their doubles match. They were the only Bruins varsity team to win the beginning game of their match.

- Landon and Tristan fought off two games where their opponents could have won the set, only to fall in a tiebreak. Bummer.
