Prairie Heights Preview

Details: August 31, 2010 at Prairie Heights High School. Match starts at 4:30.

Last Season Review: We defeated Prairie Heights 5-0.

2 Interesting Facts:
- We have not lost to Prairie Heights since I started coaching.
- Prairie Heights only returns 5 players from last year's team.

Prairie Heights Details: I've seen two result for the Panthers, and both have not looked good. Yesteday, they lost to Angola 5-0, and on the weekend they fell to Fremont 5-0. Now both those schools have good teams, but I think it means the Panthers are a bit down this year.

Bethany Christian Details: After winning the Concord Four-Way Tourney this weekend, our record is 7-1.

Projected Prairie Heights Lineup:
#1S: Torin Kellett
#2S: Brad Hughes
#3S: ??
#1D: Danny Hamm/Tyler Carbone
#2D: ??

Outlook: There is concern again tonight over whether Prairie Heights will even have a full team. I hope that they do. Either way, with them having lost 5-0 to a team that we beat 5-0, I think it is safe to say we should be able to win tonight. My hope is that things go well, we enjoy tennis tonight, and have fun with our teammates.

BC at Concord Invite

Another chance at history for the Bruins, and this time it was a bright and beautiful day. The morning was crisp, but the sun came out and burned up the tennis courts. We were hoping we could do the same thing.

We started first with Rochester. Rochester was the only team entering the tournament with a losing record, but two of those matches were 2-3 losses they should have won. The Rhinos put their strength in the doubles, where 3 of their 4 seniors played for this match. Fortunate for us, we started off quickly at almost every position. Especially the singles. In a matter of 20 minutes each singles player had polished off the first set.

In one of the more memorable points, Nate Brendle hit a big first serve at #3 singles. His opponent, a freshman, Brandt Eytcheson, who has not played more than 3 weeks of tennis, reached and popped the ball sky high. Nate ran underneath it and crushed it back towards Eytcheson. Overwhelmed by the power, he put his hands up in front of his face to deflect the ball away. It was an early moment of the power and aggressiveness that our team displayed all day.

And it continued in the doubles matches. Taking on a talented and experienced Rhino squad, Kyle and Blake quickly took care of business. Forcing many errors and serving extremely well, they breezed through the match 6-1, 6-1. Little did we know that was setting an example for the day. At #2 doubles, Russell Klassen and Evan Grimes found themselves in a bit closer match, but they too were able to force errors and pick their game up at the right time. They were playing against senior Max Hsu, who two years ago had played #1 singles for the Rhinos! But 6-3, 6-2 later, the match was done and the Bruins were 1-0 on the day.
#1S - Ben Mast - 6-2, 6-0 - Aaron Stuart (11)
#2S - Seth Krabill - 6-0, 6-0 - Jacob Schroder (12)
#3S - Nate Brendle - 6-0, 6-1 - Brandt Eutcheson (9)
#1D - Kyle Miller/Blake Shetler - 6-1, 6-1 - Cody Hershberger (12)/Josh Calhoun (12)
#2D - Russell Klassen/Evan Grimes - 6-3, 6-2 - Max Hsu (12)/Taylor Beck (11)

-----------------------------

In the next round, the Jimtown Jimmies were before us. Having graduated ever player from their Sectional championship team, they were certainly more inexperienced than the Rhinos. They were coming off a 1-4 loss to Concord in the first round where they had made both doubles positions very tight.

We didn't let #1 doubles get tight in this match. From the beginning point to the last, where Matt Ebersole hit an authoritative overhead that hit one of the Jimmies players, we were in control of the the match. It was good to see Matt and Kyle play with such confidence together, built from a nice win over Fremont on Thursday.

The singles matches were much the same as the first match. Seth dropped a game, but still cruised over Max Polluck. Ben looked like he was in control the whole time in his match. Against Rochester, Ben had streaked to 11 straight games to close the match. In this match, he had his streak broken once in each set. From Nate Brendle, finding consistency was the order, but he still simply overwhelmed sophomore Chris Raderstorf with pace when he found the court.

The only close match turned out to be #2 doubles, where Evan Grimes and Blake Shetler continued to prepare for Sectional. After an inconsistent start saw them down 5-4 in the first set, the Bruins won 9 of the next 11 games. Much more consistent serving and net attack saw them stop giving free points and start winning games. Their victory sealed another 5-0 for the Bruins.
#1S - Ben Mast - 6-1, 6-1 - Brett Aller (10)
#2S - Seth Krabill - 6-1, 6-0 - Max Polluck (12)
#3S - Nate Brendle - 6-1, 6-1 - Chris Raderstorf (10)
#1D - Kyle Miller/Matt Ebersole - 6-1, 6-1 - Cole Peterson (10)/Jake Ward (10)
#2D - Blake Shetler/Evan Grimes - 7-5, 6-2 - Augie Farwig (10)/Austin Ward (10)

-----------------------------

Last match of the day, we faced Concord. We were 0-10 lifetime against Concord, all at this tournament, I think. But today we had a chance. Concord had beaten both Rochester and Jimtown as well, so this match was for history and for a tournament title.

And boy, did we play well.

#1 doubles stormed out of the gates. Kyle Miller and Matt Ebersole played a perfect combination of placed crosscourts and net attack to take an early lead on the Minutemen. The early lead turned to 3-0, then to 5-0, then the first set was done. Kyle and Matt were being ruthlessly efficient at the net, but forcing the Concord players into lots of errors. Russell Klassen and Blake Shetler were copying the formula at #2 doubles. Soon, both doubles spots had spotless 6-0 first sets. In the second sets, the smaggressive tennis continued, and Russell hit lines and opponents with the ball. Kyle and Matt stayed energetic and focused and finished off their match as well. 2-0 for the two doubles positions.

At singles, Seth started very well. Opponent Sean Purcell had played #1 singles at Elkhart Central last year, making him the second opponent Seth has faced who played #1 last year. And for the second time, he emerged triumphant. In the first set, Purcell struggled with consistency. In the second, he found his stroke. Time and time again he forced Seth deep in the court, but time and time again Seth found an answer. Leading 5-3, Seth had three match points to close out the match. He played a bit tentative and Purcell did not, forcing another game. Again, Seth had two chances to seal the match, and on the second, Purcell hit a long serve to double fault the match.

And we had won the tournament!

Two positions were left on the court. Ben Mast struggling against an All-District talent in Jason Denton, and Nate Brendle battling fellow sophomore Matt Kotva at #3 singles. Ben and Denton traded games back and forth, back and forth in the first set. Each player refused to reveal a weakness, and Ben attacked well at times while Denton crushed angles at others. Ben fell short in the set 5-7. In the second set, Ben simply gave away too many unforced errors, and these points of opportunity were taken advantage of. Denton began to pick up his play and hit for winners, and Ben fell in the second set as well.

Nate came out firing in his #3 singles match, but firing too long. In the first set, he kept it close with a string of powerful winners. But he also kept it close with self-frustrating unforced errors. After losing the first, he found his game. He began to play points. Backhands crosscourt, set up for approach shots, won points at the net sometimes. His play picked up right when it needed to. Kotva struggled with a sore back, and Nate took advantage, taking the second set 6-3.

Which pushed the final match to a tiebreaker. Nate played confidently to take a 9-5 in the 10-point third set "Super Tiebreak." But then Nate tightened up a bit. With four matches points, he pushed some forehands and a couple of serves long. The match closed back to 9-9, and then Kotva took a 10-9 lead. But Nate battled. He tied it at 10 and then took a lead. Lost the point and then took another lead. Finally at 12-12, Nate constructed the moment of beauty as he stroked the ball deep to Kotva's backhand, hit a backhand volley cross court to make Kotva run, then finished the point with a powerful overhead. On the next point, Nate's serve went in and Kotva's return went out. Nate sealed a 4-1 Bruin win with a 14-12 tiebreak.

I was so proud of our team as I watched them hold our trophy! We have worked hard all offseason and have tried to continue that through the season practices. We have lots of talent this year. To see it blessed with this success is rewarding for me. I strive to keep our eyes on improvement, both in our tennis and in our spiritual maturity. In little ways, I see their maturity grow every day. To see it in the tennis part is also a blessing.

And the holding up the trophy is sweet! Singing "Sarasponda" is sweet! Nothing better than a team in song around a wonderful accomplishment.

As I said on the bus, before we began, "This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it!"
#1S - Ben Mast - 5-7, 2-6 - Jason Denton (11)
#2S - Seth Krabill - 6-1, 6-4 - Sean Purcell (11)
#3S - Nate Brendle - 4-6, 6-3, (14-12) - Matt Kotva (10)
#1D - Kyle Miller/Matt Ebersole - 6-0, 6-2 - T Cunningham (10)/Tony Fenech (9)
#2D - Russell Klassen/Blake Shetler - 6-0, 6-1 - Bronson DuMont (11)/Matt Ciesielski (11)

Concord Invite Preview

Details: August 28, 2010 at 9:00 AM. To be played at Concord High School.

Last Season Review: Concord - 1st, Bethany Christian - 2nd, Jimtown - 3rd, Rochester - 4th.

3 Interesting Facts:
- Bethany Christian has never won this invitational.
- Bethany Christian has never entered this event with a winning record.
- Concord has won this invitational at least 7 years in a row.

Concord Details: Concord has gotten off to a busy start to the season. After making the State finals last year, they have started this season with a 3-2 record. Their losses have come against Penn and Bremen. Penn has a traditionally strong program, and Bremen has an experienced team this year. These aren't bad losses, but the Bremen loss is certainly a sign that the Minutemen may be a bit down. On the flip side, Concord defeated Elkhart Central, a team who also defeated Goshen 4-1. So they've beaten a good team handily as well.

Jimtown Details: Jimtown is off to a 2-2 start to the season, winning against Mishawaka and NorthWood in a pair of 4-1 victories. Both victories came with close victories at many positions. They then lost two close matches to Elkhart Memorial (2-3) and Bremen (1-4). Though the lineup has stayed fairly steady, the wins have come from all positions for this young team. However, they haven't all come on the same night. No position for the Jimmies has a losing record... but only one has a winning record.

Rochester Details: The Rhinos enter with two early season losses, and then 2 matches I can't find results for. They lost 3-2 to Triton on last Thursday and 3-2 to South Bend Clay on last Wednesday. This week they've played Laville and Maconaquah, I just found the Maconaquah score, where the Zebras lost 1-4. But I've yet to a Laville score.

Bethany Christian Details: We've had a busy week already playing 3 matches. After the first two weeks we sit with a record of 4-1. Our loss to Columbia City was a close heartbreaker, but we bounced back nicely against Fremont on Thursday.

Projected Lineups:
Concord
#1S: Jason Denton (5-0)
#2S: Sean Purcell (3-2)
#3S: Matt Kotva (2-3)
#1D: T Cunningham-Tony Fenech (3-2)
#2D: Bronson DuMont-Jack Hinkle or Michael Eisman-Trevor Warren (#2 doubles is 2-3)

Jimtown
#1S: Brett Aller (2-2)
#2S: Max Polluck (2-2)
#3S: John Gray (3-1)
#1D: Cole Peterson-Jake Ward (2-2)
#2D: Austin Ward-Augie Farwig (2-2)

Rochester
from known results...
#1S: Aaron Stuart (1-3)
#2S: Max Hsu (0-3)
#3S: Brandt Eytcheson (0-3)
#1D: Cody Hershbeger-Josh Calhoun (2-1)
#2D: Jake Schroder-Taylor Peck (2-1)

Outlook
:
With Concord graduating so many good players, this is an opportunity for our team to get our first victory ever against the Minutemen. Jimtown is in the same state, having graduated all the players from their first ever Sectional title (congrats again to the Jimmies!) Rochester enters having been very competitive in each of their matches. I really think we can compete for the tournament title this year, but there are things about each lineup that make me a little nervous. I'm looking forward to the competition, looking forward to working guys in, looking forward to our first tournament preparing us for the ultimate tournament - the Sectional.

BC v. Fremont

A beautiful night to play tennis saw some beautiful tennis played. Tonight we took on a very solid side, and played like the top notch squad we are supposed to be.

The Eagles returned 4 varsity players who played at or near the same positions that they played last year. This is very similar to our team. They were experienced. They were also 2-0, posting identical 3-2 results over West Noble and Fort Wayne Northrup. They had won those matches at exactly the same spots - #2S, #3S, and #2D.

So the first thing that went well tonight is Seth Krabill and our #2 doubles of Russell Klassen (back from sickness on Tuesday) and Blake Shetler played quick matches dispatching the Eagles points of strength from the last two matches. Seth played unbelievably well, finally using his strength to put pressure on Eagle junior Matt Hoff. Blake and Russell looked glad to be reunited after two matches apart. Blake looked dominant at the net, while Russell continued to be steady if not spectacular in this match. Although, Russell did have the best shot of the match when he pounded an overhead down and accidentally hit the Eagle player at the net. It was quick and aggressive, the way we like it.

At #1 singles, Ben Mast continued his great streak of matches. Ben took on senior Joe Stackhouse, who had no answer for Ben's consistency. Stackhouse hit the ball hard and deep, but also out a lot. Ben had the perfect combination of movement and drop shots to frustrate Stackhouse. It was another quick win for Ben.

#1 doubles took a huge lead, winning the first set 6-1, and quickly charging to a 3-0 lead in the second. But soon movement stopped and aggression stopped and focus stopped and the Eagles began to turn it on. Soon the Bruins faced a 5-4 deficit. But four Kyle Miller first serves and Matt Ebersole putaways later, the Bruins had their momentum back. Two quick games later, #1 doubles sealed the victory.

At #3 singles, Nate Brendle had a difficult match. Fremont junior Matt Wilcox had a big weapon for a serve, and played a fairly consistent game. In the first set, Nate was simply making too many impatient errors. But as soon as Nate started to set his feet and started to control the points, he quickly picked up momentum as well. Nate won 5 straight games to take the second set and after falling behind 1-3 in the third, he won 5 straight games in the third set to take the match.

We really played well tonight. And the JV did as well, winning all the doubles spots. We didn't have as much success at the singles spots. But again and again, we showed improvement. Josh Helmuth hit to spots, Himal showed consistency, Wade and Justin controlled the whole match. It is good to see us improve, now I'd like to see us win!

Good night, good win, good battle.

BC v. Columbia City

Every season seems to have its heartbreaker. In 2007, it was NorthWood. In 2008, it was the Concord tourney - to Westview and to Concord. Last year, for me, it was Westview. This year, we're going to look at this match and say the same thing.

Going into this match, I knew it was going to be difficult. I tried to communicate this to my players, but it is difficult to tell guys to be ready, that the opponent is really good and have them not become scared. What ever the reason, we didn't seem to come out with the intensity needed, and it punished us in the end.

Ben Mast was brilliant tonight. I have to give him credit. Ever since his match against Nick Myers, he has really picked up his game. Tonight, he showed why he could be one of the better #1 singles players in the area. He thoroughly dismantled his opponent with excellent and powerful serves, well placed groundstrokes, well timed approaches and devastating volleys and overheads. For the 2nd night in a row, the result was never in doubt as Ben cruised.

Seth Krabill picked up the other win for the Bruins, though he made it harder than it needed to be. Seth won the first set comfortably, controlling the points and "going for more," the strategy that we have been working on for him. But in a nervy second set, he battled back and forth as Eagle senior Travis Johnson became more aggressive. Holding a 5-4 lead, Seth served for the match - but a lack of aggressive play on his part allowed Johnson to rally past him and take the set. To Seth's credit, he relaxed, came out and took a 5-0 lead in the third, before finishing 6-2.

And Seth was the last varsity player off the courts, but unfortunately by that point in the team match the win meant nothing for the team score.

At doubles, Kyle Miller and Matt Ebersole came out in the first set and were immediately overwhelmed by the power of attacking seniors Alan Murphy and JT Biggs. They went down quickly 5-0 and it looked to be a short night for them. At #2 doubles, Evan Grimes and Blake Shetler suffered the exact same fate.

Both doubles squads battled for one game in the first set, before they both fell 6-1. But the second sets were different stories. Changed attitudes were the order of the day, and instead of being intimidated, doubles became intimidating. We closed the net much more. Matt Ebersole pounded overheads - again and again. Kyle boomed in first serves. Evan hit powerful volleys at angles off the court. Blake kept his hands active and made quick volleys and putaways. #1 doubles came back with aggression to win the second set and move on to a third. Meanwhile, #2 doubles fought off elimination and pushed the second set to a tiebreak.

While all that was going on, Nathan Brendle played against a backboard. Talented sophomore Derek Hinen has some of the softest hands and quickest feet that I've seen in quite some time. No matter how well Nate hit, no matter where he placed the ball, Hinen seemed to get there and make him hit one more ball. One more ball, one more ball, one more ball. On and on through the evening. While Nate played a very solid match, he couldn't quite get over the hump and take a lead.

Back at #1 doubles, nerves of a third set got to our guys a bit, and we went down 4-1. But on Kyle's serve we had a chance to get back to 3-4 and really get back into the set and put the pressure on Columbia City. At #2 doubles, we took a 3-0 lead in the tiebreak, and then it closed to a 5-4 lead. Still, we were two points from a decisive third set. In Nate's match, he began to find the range and won a game in the second set to make 3-5, and he seemed to be pulling it back.

And then just like that, it all ended. #1 doubles lost Kyle's serve after many deuces and City served out the match for a 6-2 third set. #2 doubles got tied up at 6-6 and then saw two points slide away for an 8-6 tiebreak loss. And before I could say anything to Nate, he was shaking hands, match over. Within a matter of two minutes, hope for all three matches turned into one big L on our record.

And that's why it hurts. And it should hurt. We are a good team and we will learn from this match. All three positions that came out with losses were positions that were not used to playing under this pressure. It's the first varsity season for Nate, Matt, Blake and Evan.

But you know what. In 2007, after our heartbreaking loss, we came back to upset Fairfield in the first round of Sectional. In 2008, after our loss, we came back and defeated Penn and then won the Sectional. In 2009, we responded to our loss to play our best tennis of the season at the super competitive Wabash Invite.

We will respond again this year. We will get better.

In the JV match, Andrew Snyder saw his first action and fought long into the match with Devin Moore. Moore had filled in at #1 singles against Warsaw, and almost won a set (lost 6-7 in the 2nd). That was a great start to Andrew's tennis career. JV wins came from Abe Thorne in singles and Wade Troyer & Joel Gerig in doubles. Abe played steadily, but Wade and Joel's match was spectacular. They led 7-4, but then let the Eagles come back to force a tiebreak. The tiebreak was epic, lasting longer than Josh and Justin's entire match. But at 14-13, Joel watched an Eagle forehand sail long to seal the tiebreak victory for us.

There are many reasons to be upset after a loss like this, many excuses that could be made, many "what ifs" to ask ourselves. It is worth feeling those. But then... how will our character grow? We will persevere. We will remain focused.

Because we always focus, always battle.

Columbia City Preview

Details: August 24, 2010 at Devol Park in Columbia City. Match starts at 5:00

Last Season Review: We have never played Columbia City before.

3 Interesting Facts:
- We have never played Columbia City before.
- Columbia City's coach, Doug Stoffel, was 2008 District Coach-of-the-Year.
- Columbia City concluded last season at #7 in the District rankings.

Columbia City Details: From the results that I have seen, the Eagles are 2-1 on the season. They lost to Warsaw without their #1 player, who was sick. Then they defeated Whitko last night, who is traditionally a weaker team. They will be more than good competition.

Bethany Christian Details: We defeated two good teams last week, then a growing program last night in Mishawaka. Our record stands at 3-0.

Projected Columbia City Lineup:
#1S: Dylan Hinen (1-1)
#2S: Travis Johnson (2-1)
#3S: Derek Hinen (3-0)
#1D: J.T. Biggs-Alan Murphy (3-0)
#2D: Gabe Boles-Cole Craven (2-1)

Outlook: The Eagles are a very good team. This is not a match we should take lightly at all. The only match they've lost this season is to a district-ranked Warsaw team, and they lost without their #1 singles player. We are also a very good team. That's why we picked up this match. It won't be easy, it will be a battle. But that's what we play for. The close ones are the exciting ones. Let's show some energy and intensity in our battle tonight. Let's go!

BC v. Mishawaka

Tonight, we performed very solidly in a match where we simply had the better team. All up and down the line, guys focused and went about their match in their style. It is such an important thing to play our games no matter who the opponent is, and we did a good job sticking to the game plans tonight.

None of the matches were particularly close, but I was very impressed with the consistency level of all 3 Caveman singles players. The closest match was #3 singles, where Nate and sophomore Jon Dickerson traded 2 games each to start the match. Dickerson had a very good first serve and Nate was somewhat stumped on what to do with his second. But after he figured that out, he was able to win 10 of the next 11 games for a 6-2, 6-1 win.

As is his custom, Nate was the fourth position off the courts tonight. But unlike other nights, he was not the clinching point. That honor belonged to Seth, who cruised through aggressive junior Andrew Laubner. Laubner seemed to decide early in the match that he couldn't stay in consistent long rallies with Seth, so the Caveman #2 just started to go big whenever he had an opportunity. This led to impressive winners, but too many errors. Also found some big serves tonight as well, and won 6-0, 6-0.

First off the courts was #1 doubles. Kyle Miller and Matt Ebersole found in aggressive putaway positions time after time in their match. They played good smaggressive tennis, and then put the balls away that were presented to them. At #1 singles, Ben Mast did much the same. It was again good to see the finishing strokes from both of our #1 positions, as we picked up our first #1 doubles victory of the year.

Finishing off the match for the Bruins were juniors Blake Shetler and Evan Grimes. After a brief hiccup in the first set, Blake and Evan served and stroked their way to a rolling victory. Keeping stats for the match, I noticed that they won a whopping 95% of the points in which they got their 1st serves in. Many of these came by forcing errors with well placed serves. It's good to see our target practice paying off!

The real match of the day came at the JV level, where Ryan Minter went the distance in getting the JV it's first victory of the young season. And by saying he went the distance, I mean he went all the way to the first JV tiebreak of the year. His match went back and forth, with neither player ever leading by more than a game. With Ryan down 6-7, I told him to focus on hitting to freshman Mitchell Montgomery's backhand. Ryan won the next game at love to force the tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Ryan rushed out to a lead of 5-1 and then teetered to the 7-4 victory.

That was the only JV match, so the JV won! Congrats.

There were many beautiful moments in tonight's match, like watching Evan adjust his return to attack the net, or watching Nate whip a beautiful serve in. But perhaps my favorite part of the night was watching Kyle and Matt. Both Kyle and Matt can kill the ball on overheads and volleys, and as they aggressively attack the net in their matches they often hit balls at the opponent who is still stuck at the net. This is the proper play, and can be somewhat intimidating. But tonight, when they put the ball away they made nice solid volleys without pounding their opponents. They still hit the right play, they still hit it at their opponents, but the shots were not meant to intimidate or harm. Just to win the point.

I don't know if they meant it like this, but it embodied for me what I want this team to be about. We're not going to patronize anybody, we're going to play the right way, but we're doing it with love. I know that seems mushy, but it was a concrete example of what I hope is growing in our team.

And I hope our talent is growing as well. Another good match is in the books, and we hit the courts again tomorrow. Always focus, always battle.

Mishawaka Preview

Details: August 23, 2010 at 4:30 at Bethany Christian High School.

Last Season Review: Bethany Christian defeated Mishawak 5-0. Match report can be found here.

3 Interesting Facts:
-
In this match last season, BC only lost 8 games total across all 5 varsity positions.
- In the past 3 seasons, BC has won exactly one position 6-0, 6-0.
- Mishawaka's Bobby LeRoy and Andrew Laubner have played varsity positions for all of their 3 high school seasons.

Mishawaka Details: As far as I've read results in the paper so far this season, I believe that Mishawaka is only 0-1 on the season. I've only seen a score from their match against Jimtown, in which they fell 4-1. The only spot they won was #1 singles, but many of the matches were close. Mishawaka looks like an improved team this season.

Bethany Christian Details: After the Concord Invite was postponed from this past weekend, we still sit at 2-0 after two good wins last week over Northridge and Goshen. So disappointing not to play last week, and now the Cavemen will be the first of 6 matches this week for us.

Projected Mishawaka Lineup:
#1S: Bobby LeRoy (1-0)
#2S: Andrew Laubner (0-1)
#3S: John Dickerson (0-1)
#1D: Andrew Furlow-Andy Dong (0-1)
#2D: Michael Furlow-Ryan Mathes (0-1)

Outlook: With Jimtown defeating Mishawaka, this is a match that we need to win. It is also a match that we should win. We have a lot of experience coming back, while Mishawaka returns one of their most experienced lineups for the past couple of years, with some of their better players coming back again this season. Their scores against Jimtown show that they have definitely improved. It will be really interesting to see what their JV looks like this year, because it is always good to see the programs on our schedule build toward the future.

BC v. Goshen

A great way to open the season, playing a Sectional rival on a hot and sunny August afternoon. The courts are the same ones that we will step onto in October, and attempt to win a Sectional championship. And the opponent is one that may stand in our way.

So tonight, we started out the match nervously. Ben, Nate and #1 doubles (Kyle and Evan) found themselves down early in matches that they had maybe expected to win. Seth took an early lead over his opponent, junior Seth Koble, but it was hardly dominating at 2-1. The only position that started out really hot was #2 doubles, who opened up a 3-0 lead quickly and kept extending it.

But this had to be somewhat expected. Goshen was extremely experienced, returning 6 of their 7 varsity players. This match is important to them as well, we're a Sectional rival and just across town. They worked hard in the offseason to maximize their talent. So when we got off to nervy starts, and found ourselves staring at deficits, I was worried.

The response came like I've dreamed of throughout the year, starting with Ben Mast. When a match is tight, we've said, the winner will be the one who stays aggressive. Down 3-1 in the first set, Ben turned it on. His game came into focus, and ball after ball were stroked deep into the corners. Ben played his game, consistently putting the pressure on fellow senior Stefan Baumgartner and asking him to be equal to the task, to come up with pressure shots. Sometimes, he did; more than often Ben finished it. Ben reeled off 5 games in a row to take the set.

Following suit, the other singles players began to ratchet up the intensity. Seth Krabill was going back and forth in a close match with Koble. Koble played #1 singles last year for Goshen, so he came to the match battle tested. Seth struggled on and off throughout the match with his power strokes. When he was striking the ball well, he won the big points. Seth took the first set.

As did Nate. Again playing a player who wanted to keep the ball in and let Nate make mistakes, Nate had to control his spin and power. He moved his feet well and didn't let mistakes get to him and won the second set.

While #2 doubles continue to roll, #1 doubles started their own run. Down 5-0 in the first set, they finally got their act together. Moving forward and keeping with the team theme of aggression, they ran off 4 straight games to get right back into the match. But it wasn't enough to close the set, as Goshen won to take the set. But the momentum continued into the second set, and Kyle and Evan attacked the net and controlled the match from there. The match stayed close, but Kyle and Evan worked their way to a 5-4 lead. Unfortunately, they couldn't close the match, and then they lost in the second set.

But before that happened, #2 doubles closed out their match and Ben continued to pour it on in his match, taking the second set as well. That meant it was down to Nate or Seth to pull out the third point for the victory.

Unfortunately, Nate went down 1-4 to begin the second set. Balls were flying long, slice shots landing in the net. And Seth, well, his match continued to be what it was the whole time. Close. Super close. He couldn't pull away but neither could Koble.

With a little word from the coach, Nate started getting his feet set. Then he started playing long points. Then he started winning. And it didn't stop. It didn't stop until he won five straight games and won the third point for the Bruins! For the second match in a row, Nate got the clinching point.

Then Seth turned up the aggression, and from 5-5 he began to really attack. From deuce in the 5-5 game until the end of the match, Seth won 4 of the next 6 points from the net. And that aggression enabled him to close out the match.

For the varsity, tonight could really have been a let down match, after defeated Northridge on Tuesday. And while our focus may have been shaky at the start, this team showed an aggression that was needed at critical points, and were able to pull out an impressive victory over a very talented and experienced Redskin team.

For the JV, Goshen's experienced varsity meant and experienced JV. Matt Ebersole did his part, after playing #1 doubles Tuesday he took care of #1 singles JV tonight. We struggled to find other wins, but it was much closer than the Raider match. We need to see improvement throughout the season, and it will come as we add the power and placement to our games. Matt was able to bring that, others had a difficult time. So, next time we'll do even better.

The Airstream Art Dream

I have a crush
On an American Dream...
Of getting in my Airstream...
And living free
untethered - unplugged
completely off the grid.
I want to start with an old one
and restore it with some personality.
Make it fit me, a little bit dignified, a little bit playful, a little bit fierce
Living space, studio space...
Free as a bird
Completely alone in a aluminum cocoon
(Well... perhaps with the company of a good dog!)
where anything is possible
owning little beyond the travel trailer and the truck that hauls it.

but living a rich full life.

A life that is full of laughter and wonder.

I wanna live that life where I can put aside their expectations...
and reach for something deeper, more honest, more real.

I just can't wait to get on the road again!
Happy Trails,
-Carmen Rose

Goshen Preview

Details: August 19, 2010 at 4:30. To be played at Goshen's courts, at Goshen Middle School.

Last Season Review: Bethany Christian defeated Goshen 5-0. Match report can be found here.

3 Interesting Facts:
- This is the first time Goshen and Bethany both teams having winning records at the time of the match.
- BC is currently in a 3 match winning streak against the Redskins.
- Seth Krabill is riding an 11 match winning streak at #2 singles.

Goshen Details: Goshen opened their season on Monday, defeating Mishawaka Marian 3-2. They opened last season exactly the same way. They picked up wins at #1 & #2 singles, as well as at #1 doubles. They return 6 of 7 from their varsity last year, so they have plenty of experience.

Bethany Christian Details: The Bruins come off an outstanding 3-2 win over Northridge on Tuesday night. That puts our record at 1-0 on the season. The JV lost the Northridge match, so will be looking for their first team victory.

Projected Goshen Lineup:
#1S: Stefan Baumgartner (1-0)
#2S: Seth Koble (1-0)
#3S: Nick Dandino (0-1)
#1D: Jonny Tan/Drew Hochstetler (1-0)
#2D: Eli Metzler-Prieb/Paul Johnson (0-1)

Outlook:
This is a match that is important to us, a cross-town rival and a Sectional opponent. Goshen will have a good team this year, their experience has been built over the past two seasons and they have worked hard during the offseason. This is another of the big matches that we have to begin this year. We must continue to stay focused, because Goshen has talent. This should be another close match.

BC v. Northridge

For the first time in Bruin tennis history, we have defeated the Northridge Raiders.

For the first time in my coaching history, we have started the season 1-0.

It's a great challenge to start the year, every year, against the Raiders. Year in and year out, Northridge has a tradition of fielding a talented team. The dedication to tennis and the importance of working hard at it throughout the offseason is part of the mindset of all who play in the Raider program. Because of that, they never have a weak team. Along with Concord, Warsaw, Penn and a few others, Northridge is one of the strongest programs in northern Indiana. Just look at the Sectional and Regional banners hanging by their courts to prove it.

And although the graduated five seniors from last year's team, this year's team has a lot of talent as well. Starting right at the top was senior Nick Myers, who went 21-3 last year at #1 singles. Or at #1 doubles, where they have senior David Long, who defeated Mikey Kelly last year in a long singles match. All the other players joining the varsity ranks put in long offseason work as well, from Elite camps to Eastlake lessons. So this was a good test for us.

Early in the day, during school I was really nervous. I wanted us to play our best. So I have this silly story about our new jerseys. I wanted them to come in, because we'd ordered them in June, then they were back ordered. I thought it would give us a little pick me up, a little confidence boost if our cool new jerseys came in. And so as I walked to the office at lunch, I began praying that our jerseys would be in. I got to my mailbox, and there they were! It really calmed my nerves to know that God answered my insignificant prayer request. It reminded me that God is good.

It gave me hope that God would be good in the match as well, maybe not making us win, but at least helping us play to the level we have worked for. And I think that's exactly what happened.

In the varsity match, things started out very well for us. We took early first set leads at every position except for #1 singles. In that match, the play looked very even, but the points kept being finished by Nick Myers of Northridge. That's usually the difference between the very best players in the state and those who are just below. Ben got close in many games, but Myers always seemed to have an answer. Near the end of the first set, Ben put in a nice run. But Nick ended up cruising to a two set victory.

In doubles, Matt Ebersole and Kyle Miller came out aggressive in the first set, but were very well matched with their opponents, David Long and Alex Radelich. Throughout the first set, the match swung back and forth. But what it really swung on was who was being more aggressive. When Kyle and Matt were swinging through, they were also able to control the net. When they controlled the net, the were winning the match. Both good volleyers, they put continual pressure on the Raiders, and it paid off with a first set victory. In the second set, Kyle and Matt couldn't get any runs going. They first started off going down, then won 2 in a row, then lost 2 in a row, then won 2 in a row... they couldn't ever get streaks going of 3, 4, 5 games and really seal the deal with a charge of momentum. The match ended up going three sets, and towards the end our energy waned and we got a bit tentative. The final set was 6-4 for Northridge, the second and final victory.

At #2 singles, Seth Krabill started off this season as he did the last, a #2S victory over the Raiders. This year his opponent was Chris Robbins, a sophomore playing his first varsity match (he has a bright future!) Chris has solid groundstrokes and this match was much like the #1S match, it looked even but Seth just did a better job winning points. Attacking the backhand, Seth gained early leads in each set only to see Robbins fight back. In the end, the difference was Seth's ability to attack short balls and move Robbins that gave him a slight advantage. That advantage turned into a victory for the Bruins.

#2 doubles played very well for us last night. Never completely dominating but always steady, Russell Klassen and Blake Shetler did a great job combining aggressive play with smart play. Tonight, I would say that their match was the closest we came to pure "smaggressive" tennis. Many times Russell would load up a groundstroke and pound a passing shot, while Blake patrolled the net and found the angles to put well placed volleys through. They looked very comfortable and took advantage of Raider errors to jump out early in each set. The result was another victory.

And then, there was the #3 singles match. Sophomore Nate Brendle taking the court for the Bruins for the first time, against his old school. Did I mention that as Nate's match wore on, we took a 2-1 lead and we were looking for one more point to seal the match? And oh, it came down to him. Nate was playing freshman Josh Garfein, another young Raider with an excellent career ahead. Garfein decided he wouldn't be able to hit out with Nate, and so played the role of counter-puncher that is so hard to play against.

But I was so proud of Nate. He stayed patient. Despite struggling with his serve, and making some unforced errors (which always happens against counter-punchers), he stayed positive. He took a close first set 6-4, and took a 4-3 lead in the second. Things looked good. Then all of a sudden, he lost 2 games and was faced with serving to stay in the set. But he stayed incredibly composed and confident, and tied things up at 5-5 with a great service game. Then he broke to go to 6-5. In the next game, a little tightness and a long forehand had him down 15-40. But with the calm hand of an experienced player, he pulled the game back to deuce, moving his feet, setting himself and playing his game. At deuce, he blasted a forehand down the line to take the advantage. Then one more well played point, backhand crosscourt, error from Garfein, and the match was over. We had won.

The JV match was not quite as exciting. Like I've said before, Northridge is a great program. So they bring lots of good skill throughout their lineup. For us, we've got a lineup filled with players who love tennis, but haven't been playing for that long. Hopefully that's changing with the development of the middle school tennis program, but it is still a work in progress. We played hard and there were bright spots.

Evan Grimes and Abe Thorne looked good at #1 doubles JV. Evan is a varsity quality player right now, still competing for a spot at #1 doubles on the varsity. Abe is a player who really just started taking tennis real seriously last spring. They've both improved so much from the place that they started. Small errors and learning experiences, as well as very good opponents, caused them to lose this match, but there were many positives.

And we won one position on the JV. Wade Troyer and Joel Gerig played a solid match, with real solid doubles tactics. They controlled the net. Which is good considering how tall they are, I'd be upset if the didn't! I thought it was a very impressive debut for Joel, in his first official high school match, and Wade continued the improvement we saw at the end of last season. But this was Wade's first win! Celebrations are in order!

The whole JV showed improvement from last year too, and I've been especially impressed with Ryan Minter and Josh Helmuth. And we can't forget to mention Parth Patel, who led the JV tonight at #1 singles. After being shutout in his #1 singles match, Parth got to play another match and didn't want to get shutout again. Trailing 5-0, I talked to him about being more aggressive, and lo and behold, he won the very next game at love while being more aggressive!

There was improvement all around at the JV level, something that I hope continues into the Goshen match Thursday.

So a good night, a good singing of Sarasponda together, of feeling like we were able to play to our best. Not to mention that a lot of our alumni came out and blessed us by kicking off the new season with us. It was good to see the old and the new. Altogether, I can sum up my thoughts with the very generic phrase, "It was good."

And I pray that this is only the start of a great season together: growing, playing, praying, focusing, battling and enjoying.

Always focus, always battle.
